Black and white brigades

For my last black and white post comparison, I’ve played with a photo from my father’s WW2 album, darkening the image to bring out the words taken from Churchill’s most famous speech in June 1941: “We shall never negotiate with Hitler”. I’m comparing it with a photo I took in 2017 in Amiens, France, ofContinue reading “Black and white brigades”

Black and white plate stacks

Once I was sitting near a cafĂ© counter where I could take a close photo of the stacks of plates and cups waiting to be used. The resulting picture reminded me of one taken in about 1941 in North Africa, probably Egypt, which I found in my father’s WW2 album. The man in the turbanContinue reading “Black and white plate stacks”

Black and white Art Deco

A few years ago I went to Napier in New Zealand, the Art Deco ‘capital’ of the world due to the style of its architecture constructed after the commercial part of the town was destroyed in an earthquake in 1931. I took this photo (on the right) of one of the buildings with vintage carsContinue reading “Black and white Art Deco”

Black and white dams

At present there is a lot of water in the south-east of Australia. The rain keeps falling and the rivers keep overflowing into towns. Sometimes the authorities release water from catchment dams to try to prevent them spilling over, though the released water can cause problems downstream. The release of dam water is always aContinue reading “Black and white dams”

Black and white animal lovers

Recently I was leaning against a tree with my camera shutter set to electronic, that is, silent, when a girl walked towards a swan to tempt it out of the water. She was wearing a dinosaur dress with spikes down the back. I took her picture and converted it to black and white. Then IContinue reading “Black and white animal lovers”

Black and white scaffolding

Today I’ve pulled out a photo of some bamboo scaffolding from my father’s World War Two album. Next to it, I’m placing a photo I took a few weeks ago of some scaffolding against an apartment block under construction. While the old 1940s photo is blurry, it’s clear enough to tell us that the scaffoldingContinue reading “Black and white scaffolding”

Black and white murals

Not far from where I live there is some excellent graffiti of faces painted on a series of light-coloured walls beneath an overpass. It’s in black and grey, so there wasn’t much to lose by photographing it in black and white, which I did a few weeks ago. The graffiti artist signed his work Voir.Continue reading “Black and white murals”

Black and white fruit

Since I was small I’ve loved a photo in my father’s World War Two album of an Egyptian weighing fruit in a market. Recently I went to some fruit and vegetable shops and international grocery shops to try to catch someone weighing fruit, though I knew it would be on a modern set of scales.Continue reading “Black and white fruit”

Black and white animal handlers

In my album of photos from Egypt, taken in 1941 and 1942, there are some photos of a monkey named Kan-Kan performing in the street, muzzled and held on a leash by a handler. When I went to my local zoo a couple of years ago, I took photos of animal handlers, such as theContinue reading “Black and white animal handlers”

Black and white ruins

A few years ago in Les Angles, France, near the Spanish border, I came across a collapsed cottage, its roof shingles caving in, door hanging off, woodwork tumbling to the ground. I took a photo of it, not because of the decrepitude but because of the colours. Every one of the dark grey shingles wasContinue reading “Black and white ruins”
