This week I chose a card from the Street Photography Challenge box by David Gibson that asked me to look at things from a different perspective. Take a photo of reflections and turn it upside down, he writes. The photo above of a casuarina branch arching up from the pond surface is one I tookContinue reading “Street photography: upside down”

Street photography: Obstructed View
This week, having randomly selected a card from The Street Photography Challenge box by David Gibson, my task was to photograph a scene where an object blocks the view. At a charcoal chicken shop one night I was surprised when I looked in the window to see a number of chickens roasting nicely on aContinue reading “Street photography: Obstructed View”
Street photography: Feet
(This is Take 2 for this post. I published Take 1 after midnight last night but this morning my feet photo has disappeared. Never give up…) Last year I gave myself a challenge of writing about unusual things I saw every day in my life. This year I planned to take a photography course andContinue reading “Street photography: Feet”
Black and white brigades
For my last black and white post comparison, I’ve played with a photo from my father’s WW2 album, darkening the image to bring out the words taken from Churchill’s most famous speech in June 1941: “We shall never negotiate with Hitler”. I’m comparing it with a photo I took in 2017 in Amiens, France, ofContinue reading “Black and white brigades”
Black and white plate stacks
Once I was sitting near a cafĂ© counter where I could take a close photo of the stacks of plates and cups waiting to be used. The resulting picture reminded me of one taken in about 1941 in North Africa, probably Egypt, which I found in my father’s WW2 album. The man in the turbanContinue reading “Black and white plate stacks”
365 Unusual Things: 323-329
323. A potter friend made a ceramic egg carton, put a few eggs in it and advertised it on Facebook who took it down because it promotes animal products. She took the eggs out, advertised it again, and it passed the test.
Black and white animal lovers
Recently I was leaning against a tree with my camera shutter set to electronic, that is, silent, when a girl walked towards a swan to tempt it out of the water. She was wearing a dinosaur dress with spikes down the back. I took her picture and converted it to black and white. Then IContinue reading “Black and white animal lovers”
365 Unusual Things: 232-238
232. There’s a guy living in his car in my street, parking often outside my house. The morning temperatures here are mostly below zero Celsius. This morning he started up the engine at 4 am, sat there a while, drove off, probably to warm up, and by 7 am he was back. 233. Saw anContinue reading “365 Unusual Things: 232-238”
365 Unusual Things: 204-210
204. Bought a robot vacuum cleaner. It doesn’t pick up crumbs on the edges of the room. This is unusual because it was expensive. 205. Received a photo of my great-grandfather’s grave which surprised me. I’ve been told he had a mansion with maids. But the photo shows he lies in an unmarked grave. 206.Continue reading “365 Unusual Things: 204-210”
365 Unusual Things: 190-196
190. Saw an amazing bike sculpture in someone’s front yard. Passers-by are allowed to pedal the bike and make the wheels above turn. I didn’t, because I was alone and the owners weren’t around. 191. On a woman’s tracksuit jumper were the words Eat Sleep OTF Repeat. I sat by the pond imagining what OTFContinue reading “365 Unusual Things: 190-196”
